Presentation Contest for Students of the Super Science High School 2020

Presentation Contest for Students of the Super Science High School 2020 was held online.  Our students from the chemistry club had recorded their poster presentation and submitted it to the contest.  This day, they watched presentations made by the other students online and voted for the best.  Though held online, our students have learned a lot on how to make a better presentation.

Relay Lecture

On July 29h, some of the 3rd year students took part in the Relay Lecture to deepen the understanding of the community.  The lecturers were from Saijo City Hall.  The topics were about local industry and water conditions in Saijo.

Seminar at Ehime University

On July 25th and 26th, at Ehime University, a seminar was held in order for high school students to enhance their science skills.  Four students of our school took part in it.  They worked on the experiment in the field of biology and they also learned about data processing with "R", a software.

On July 18th and 19th, at Ehime University, the seminar was held in order for high school students to enhance their science skills.  Two groups(nine students) of our school took part in the conference.  They worked on the experiment in the field of chemistry.

Kahaku Science Research Presentation Meeting

On July 24th, at Ehime Prefectural Science Museum, the 6th Kahaku Science Research Presentation Meeting was held.  Four groups of our students took part in both the meeting of their poster presentation and their stage presentation.  And they won the first prize in each session.

Relay Lecture

On July 16h, some of the 3rd year students took part in the Relay Lecture.  The lecturers were from the Engineering Faculty of Tokushima Bunri University, and Saijo City Hall.  The topics were about robots operating without any engine, tips to create citizen-centered community, and the current medical affairs in Saijo City.

Ehime has "Dogo Onsen."  It is a famous hot spring in Japan.  Many tourists visit there every year.  It is so good!

The Legend of White Heron:
Long, long ago, a white heron which had injured its leg found the hot spring.  It came there to soak its leg in the spring water every day.  After that, its injury was cured.  People who heard about the story used the hot spring.  There, they could relax and became rejuvenated.  Also, sick people used the hot spring and they recovered from their illness!!

When you come to Japan, please take the time to visit this spring bath.

The following is a student's response to the topic: The person I admire the most.

The person I admire the most is Mr. Ito.  The person is a junior high school teacher and an advisor of the tennis club to which I belonged.  Without the person, I wouldn't have improved tennis skills as much as now.  He told me to relax when I was nervous at the tournament.  I like his words: "At the tournament, you can only show what you have done so far."  I learned from him that if I can only do what I have done in practice, I don't have to worry too much.  I took a while to get this meaning, but once I understood it, I enjoyed playing tennis very much.  I also received so much advice that I couldn't write here.  That is why I respect Mr. Ito.

The most memorable present I received is a book.  It is "The Little Prince" written by Saint-Exupery.  I received it from my mother for my firthday.  I think that he wrote about friendship; responsibility, love and so on.  I like this story.  This story is written both in Japanese and plain English.  Also, I can listen to the story because the book has a CD.  In addition, pictures of this book are beautirul.  So I like this book very much.  That's why this book is a favorite book to me.

Cell phones have a good point.  For example, you can contact with your family and get disaster information when you suffer a disaster.  There are many earthquakes in Japan due to lying on the circum-Pacific earthquake zone.  So, it is convenient for sufferers to do such things.

On the other hand, they have a bad point.  Flick input may lead to forgetting kanji and using a keyboard slowly.  Because most people who use smart phone depend on predicted conversion system, and using flick input not using keyboard.  However, when it comes to getting a job, you have to use keyboard input.  Therefore, as is often the case with using technology, we should take advantage of cell phones skillfully.

I think we should save electricity, gas and water.  I have two reasons for this.

First, it is essential to stop global warming.  Supplying electricity and using gas release much CO2 into the atmosphere.  So, I always turn off TV and light when I don't use them.  Also, I use extra heat for cooking.  These action is effective to save energy, I think.

Second, we have torotect various creatures and beautiful scenery.  This is because they are being broken by people who build dams and dig natural gas.  People do these things because people need a lot of energy.  I have ever seen some pictures of animals which suffer from environmental destrution.

Because of these, I think it is proper for people to save energy.

I think that the activity to reduce plastic will make a good world.  I have two reasons why I think so.
Firstly, burning the plastic emits a lot of CO2.  And the process needs a lot of time.  Therefore, theplastic is not good for the environment.

Secondly, the plastics make ocean dirty.  Sometimes, people throwthe plastic waste to the ocean.  The waste can't melt quickly.  Therefore, the plastic waste flow in the oceanfor a long time.  And, some fishes and ocean animalseat the waste, and they are killed.  Sometimes we may eat the fish whicheat the waste.  It is dangerous for our health.  So, we need to reduce the plastic thrown into the ocean.

I think that 3Rs can solve the environmental issues.  "3Rs" means Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  I'll introdue two examples.
First, you can reduce trash by using eco-bags.  Eco-bags are thing that you can use when you go shopping to a supermarket.  Eco-bags can reduce trash that would be produced by using plastic bags.  My mother didn'T use an eco-bag before knowing 3R.  But since she knew 3R, she started using an eco-bag.  I also take an eco-bag when I go shopping.

Second, you can recycle things such as paper, plastic bottles and so on.  You can throw away such things into recycling boxes.  Then,by douing so, they can be recycled and used as another thing.

I believe that 3R works for the better environment like these two examples.  3R can give the world good influence.

Global warming is now gaining attentionas one of the global issues.  I think it is good for each family to take part in activities.  For example, we should keep the air conditioner at a low degree.  We should not leave water running.  While my father is brushing his teeth, he always leave water running.  When I see him doing so, I stop the running water, saying, "Don't leave the water running!  Don't waste it."  Then, he came not to do so. It is important for each of us to be careful about everything in our life.

Also, the forests destroyed for the benifit and livelihood of people are increasing. I was sad to hear the news that a koala got a serious burn because of slash-and-burn farming in Australia.  I think it is threatening not only the environment but also animal life.  Tree planting is effective.  Animals and insects can get homes again and decreasethe amount of CO2.

Therefore, we should continue to think about living with nature.

Japan is working on solving the environmental issues.  It's important to consider the way to solve them.  Then, I came up with the idea.  It is that people in the world grow up their own trees.  There are two reasons.

First, plants produce oxygen, but they are decreasing now.  It's because people don't plants after they cut and use them.  Then, all people grow trees, and then they can increase them.

Second, plants can be some creatures' homes.  It's necessary for us to preserve them.

I think that it is good for the environment to pick up a trash.  I have two reasons.

Firstly, if we do that, the places where we pick up trsh will be clean.  I joined a volunteer work on the last summer vacation. After the firwork festival, I went to the river bank and picked up trash.  It was very early morning, so I was sleepy.  I wanted to finish.  But when my teacher said to me, "There was no trash.  This place is clean.  It's thanks to you," I was happy.  I thought it is good to pick up trash.

Secondly, it is easy to pick up trash.  Even small children can do.  And even for a short time, we can do.  So we should pick up trash for the environment.

In this way, I think it is effective to pick uptrash.  So I want to join volunteer activities from now on.  And I want to pick up trash in many places such as schools and parks myself.  To pick up trash is easy and we feel good when the places are cleaned.  So it is effective.

Ehime Senior High School Cultural Festival

On November 16th, Saturday, a science presentation contest was held.  The contest is part of Ehime Senior High School General Cultural Festival, and was held in the Science Museum in Niihama.
6 groups took part in the preliminary poster presentation session, and 4 groups progressed to the finals.  Two chemistry groups and one earth science group won the Good Performance Award, and one earth science group won the Incentive Award.

Groups which won the Good Performance Awards are going to take part in the nationwide contest in 2020.

I think that giving someone thesilent treatment is worse.  I have two reasons.  First, I felt sad when my friend gave me the silent treatment once.  I didn't know why she got angry, and I was bothered.  Second, giving someone thesilent teatment can't solve your problems.  It is important to talk about them and admit each other's opinions.

Multi Science Ⅰ(Interim Presentation)

On November 12th, Tuesday, Interim Presentation of Multi Science I, which is the subject Saijo High School sets, was held. 

Group Kabu-chan's, made a model poster presentation.  Their research theme is "Mystery of horseshe crabs--why they, one of the endangered species, have escaped mass extinction."   Ms Yamasaki from Okayama Prefectural Tamashima Senior High School and Mr Sato from Takamatsu Daiichi Senior High School gave them tips to improve their presentation.

Second year students, in total 57 groups of them, made a interim presentation respectively.  30 groups are working on research study in the field of liberal arts, while 27 groups on natural science.  First year students also took part in the presentation as audience.

On October 31st, Thursday, 1st year students had "Yu-fa-z."  Students who represented each class made a presentation on "International Understanding" and "Medical Affairs."  They referred to what they had learned through lectures by Saijo City Hall staff and what students themselves had researched, and they suggested their plans to improve the present situation their community is facing.  The 1st year students all actively participated in the presentation and the question and answer session as well.

On October 26th, Saturday, at Osaka City University, the 16th High School Students' Grand Contest on Chemistry.  Our students made an presentaion on Ishizuchi Kurocha, or black tea.  Their topic was "Scientific Analysis of Ishizuchi Kurocha: For Good Taste and Good Health."

Saijo Halloween Party 2019

Saijo City Halloween Party was held in Saijo Shopping Mall on October 26th, Saturday.  Some of our students took part in the event as volunteer staff.  Uchinuki Wartern, or Saijo High School Mascot, was an "idol."  Young children looked happy when taking a picure with the mascot.

I think it is a good point of school uniforms that we don't have to choose clothes to go to school everyday.  I am for school uniforms.  I have two reasons to support my opinon.  First, they enable us to save several minutes to choose clothes.  Students are very busy.  Second, wearing schol uniforms is economical.  We don't need to buy many clothes.  School uniforms should be changed, because Japanese clomate has changed.  Old-fashioned designs such as sailor suit or gakuran are difficult to suit the change of temperature.

School uniforms make us feel part of the group.  It prevents discrimination based on clothes and saves time, effort and money.  There's no need to buy new clothes or think about what to wear.  Uniforms could help us study and "get into concentration mode" in a way how our roms might slow down our studying becayse it's a place of comfort.  Bad sides include no chances to express individuality or uniqueness.  Teenagers are at a point of their lives where they have to discover themselves but uniforms hinder that development.  Uniforms also makes us identifiable, which in turn represents the school.  Since it's possible to five the schol a bad reputaion, it calls for stricter rules.  Strict rules make the atmosphere unconfortable, where as wearing our own clothes would ake  us feel relaxed, and of course people are more comfortable if they get to choose what to wear.  I'm not against school uniforms, but I think there is an alternative solution.

Exchange Students Visited Us

On September 11th, Wednesday, two exchange students who are studying at the graduate school of Kyoto University visited us.  They are now staying at Kanbe and Senjo respectively for their research study.  A student from Vietnam is studying Japanese culture, and a French student is working on local resources.  ESS international understanding club students introduced popular sweets shops in Saijo.  They had a pleasant interaction.

On August 31st, Saturday, "CanSat KOSHIEN(Shikoku Area)" was held at Marine Park Niihama.  Saijo High School students, who are working on the research study with Niihama National College of Technology, took part in the Shikoku tournament.  Students who are studying technology at college or high school participated, and out students did their best.  They were ranked the third and won the incentive award.

Science Camp with Kyoto University

On August 24th and 25th, our students took part in a science camp (sponsored by Kyoto University) .  The camp was held at Saijo City Regional Revitalization Center and other places in Saijo City.  On the afternoon of the 24th and the morning of the 25th, our students had a field work around rice terraces in Senjo.  After that they gave a presentation on their research to local citizens at the local community center.

On August 19th and 20th, High School Students' Research Presentation Contest was held in Yamaguchi.  High schools which have science and math course in Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu areas took part in it.  Ten students of our school's science and math course, who had the research study  in the fields of mathematics, chemistry and earth science, participated in the contest and they made a presentation.

The following are responses to the assignment "If you take a foreigner to some tourist sights in Japan, what place will you recommend?"

★ I will introduce Okinawa.  I have visited there once.  I have three reasons why I want to introduce it.  First, nature of Okinawa is beautiful.  We can see coral reef and brilliantly fish in the sea.  Also we are able to swim together.  Second, we should learn about World War Ⅱ.  The Second World War had a major influence all over the world.  Third, staying in Okinawa makes us feel at ease.  For these reasons, I will introduce Okinawa.

★ I recommend you should visit Nara Park.  It is very popular among foreigners.  In Nara Park, we can give deer some food.  But you should be careful because they eat anthing.  There is Todaiji temple near Nara park.  There, you can see the Gread Buddha.  It is so big and wonderful.  We can have many precious experiences.  Let's visit Nara Park and give deer food!

★ If I take a foreigner to some tourist sights in Japan, I will recommend Hiroshima.  I have been to Hiroshima many times.  There are many places to visit.  For example, Matsuda doom stadium, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Yamato Museum, Miroku no sato, and so on.  We can watch baseball games in Matsuda Stadium.  It's very exciting.  Miroku no sato is an amusement park.  Most people can enjoy visiting there.  So I want foreign tourists to go to Hiroshima.

★ I want to take you to "Mizuki Shigeru road."  I have never been  there.  I also want to go there.  There are a lot of unique Japanese ghosts which were made by Mizuki Shigeru.  Mizuki Shigeru is a famous Japanese cartoonist.  His most famous comic is "Gegege no kitaro."  My favorite ghost is "Tofu kozo."  You will be happy if you visit there!

From August 6th to the 8th, our students took part in a science technology tour in Kansai area.  They learned much about science at the institutions such as the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial/Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, RIKEN, Osaka University, Nojima Fault Prevention Museum,andso on.  Some of them also made a presentation at the SSH students' research presentation contest held in Kobe.
